This year (2017-18) my youngest child is finally in 4th grade and in California that is the year we study the 21 missions. My two daughters had to build their missions (without a kit thank you very much) and we did let them do most of it on their own. I will say that mission San Diego de Alcalá & Nuestra Señora de la Soledad turned out just fine. This year was different because we had our choice of medium in which to “build” the mission, and my son chose Minecraft!

SITE 2013 Conference Gems

Today is Day 2 of the SITE (Society of Information Technology & Teacher Education) 2013 Conference in New Orleans, LA. I have heard some great gems, two of them I want to post today, more will follow!

Google+ Communities

If your school is using Google Apps for Education, and you (like me) have been using Google Groups as a discussion forum, I would encourage you to create a Community on Google+ and invite your students to it. You can create topics just like in Groups, but the students can interact with it more like a social media environment. They can post, comment, upload video, take video right on the spot, have a Hangout with other students online, embed YouTube and watch from within the post. The community is secure and private, only those you invite are in there. It is a great way to engage with your students in a more dynamic environment.

Still concerned about school security? The US Naval Academy just announced they are using Google Apps for Government. I think if Google Apps is secure enough for the US Navel Academy then you can feel safe.

 

Engrade

Looking for a FREE gradebook option? Here is Engrade. Engrade is easy to use and the bonus is that if you are using Google Apps for Education, and have a Google Site, you can embed the Engrade widget into the site to allow the students to see their grades. Engrade uses the student login to authenticate the user and only displays the information of the user logged in.  Schools and teachers are praising Engrade, and I think you will too.

This app is available on ANY device (computer, web, smartphone, tablet) so if you have an internet connection you can access your data. Students Need Google Search Help

Just because we think our students are tech savvy, does not mean they are proficient when it comes to productive web searching.

Students might come to us with tech skills, but those skills might be gaming skills, iTunes skills, singing cat on YouTube searching skills or App Store purchasing skills. Our students are not necessarily coming to school with quality web searching skills.  Google offers Lesson Plans for teaching Google Search. These lessons are separated into Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced and are on topics like “Picking the right search terms,” “Understanding search results” and “Evaluating credibility of sources” and more. In the Lesson Plan tab, you will find Standards mapping (CC, AASL & ISTE NETS-S.)

There are also YouTube videos we can show that gives students a better idea of how Google Search works:

It is not difficult to teach some basic search practices, and even work in some Google Search Lessons into you activities. This will make for more productive, robust and well-rounded searching results in the future.
